Meet the nicest people riding Catrike!

RECUMBENT TRIKES CANADA is an Orillia, Ontario dealer for CATRIKES.
This is our 13th year of operation as a small, home-based, enthusiast-run retirement business.
Our aim is to introduce interested people to the strengths and benefits of riding recumbent trikes, particularly Catrikes.

Developed in Winter Garden Florida, Catrikes have been refined over the years into a great recumbent trike.

Catrikes, and other quality trikes, offer a comfortable ride, much like pedalling a 27 to 30 speed chaise lounge ;-)
Handling is very good in all models and exceptional in such trikes as Expedition and 700.
Catrikes feel like a cross between a great handling sports car, and a go-cart.

Trikes offer the life enhancing benefits of exercise, mobility, fresh air, comfort and fun... all at the same time!
Recumbent trikes are for anybody... anybody who appreciates these qualities!

Are they really as comfortable as they look?
Once set up properly, I get the feeling that I could ride all day in comfort. In fact, I have done so, many times.

Four times I've participated in the National 24-Hour Challenge, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I've never gone less than 250 miles in a day. My personal best is 280 miles in a 24 hour period. Compared to 'real' athletes, that is not great, but for someone well past his mid 60s who doesn't train regularly and is not a serious athlete, I think it's respectable.

My personal best in Calvin's 12-Hour Challenge in Springfield, Ohio, was 185 miles in 12 hours. Enough to take some pride in, but again, not at the level of real athletes.

Back in 2001, I rode a recumbent trike from Orillia, Ontario to Charlottetown, PEI. carrying my tent, camping gear and much of my food and supplies. It was a comfortable 20 day ride of about 2000 km. On the trike it was a pain-free experience.

My wife and I have entered the week long "Bike Florida - supported cycle tour" in March four times - riding our Catrikes.

Also, on two occasions I've ridden the "Golden Triangle". This supported tour starts at Castle Mountain Junction, in Alberta, and climbs over the Great Divide to Golden, British Columbia, on to Radium, B.C. the second day, then back to Castle Mountain again over the Great Divide the third day. This averages about 100 km per day.

A couple of times I've ridden in the Rideau Lakes Tour, which goes from Ottawa to an overnight at Queen's University in Kingston and returns the next day... about 100 miles per day.

I wouldn't consider long distance events on anything but a recumbent. My wrists, neck, bottom, back would never tolerate a long and intense ride without pain.
On a trike - no problem!!!

Trikes are a fine piece of sporting equipment for virtually everyone,
but definitely the most rewarding aspect of selling Catrikes is seeing what they can do for some people
who otherwise would have to give up cycling altogether due to a variety of challenges.
People who suffer from debilitating strokes, dizziness, and various injuries,
have often found that they can return to the pleasure and therapeutic exercise
that cycling provides, through a recumbent trike.

Here is the story of an injured Canadian Peacekeeper whose life was changed by a Catrike!

A D A P T A T I O N S:

Trikes can be adapted to people with limited use of either hand
by moving shifters and/or brake control to the strong side.

Rider's feet can be attached to pedals simply by adding cycling cleats and shoes.

We're also found recently, that putting a shorter crank arm on oneside,
can allow someone who has one knee that lacks full range of motion, to pedal the adapted trike.

Whatever your reason - therapy, healthy exercise, or just plain FUN - if you think a Catrike might work for you, arrange a test ride. See for yourself if it might be the answer you've been seeking.

ALWAYS KEEP TIRE PRESSURES WITHIN RECOMMENDED RANGE !!!

This is the simplest way to keep your trike or bicycle performing at its very best and to prevent flat tires.
When tire pressure is allowed to get low, hitting a rock can pinch an underinflated tube against the downward facing edges of the rims - causing a "snake bite" or "pinch puncture".

Recommended tire pressure is printed on the side of each tire. On Catrikes with Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires - the Expedition for example - the pressure recommended is 55 to 85 psi (pounds per square inch).

Incidentally, the amazing 2013 Catrike 700, has rear tire pressure of 145 psi and front tire pressures of 160 psi!!! If you put that much pressure into a tire recommended for lower pressures - such as those on the Expedition - the blast as it blows out will be heard like a gunshot! Don't overinflate!

Why such high pressure tires on the new 700? One ride will show you!
It reduces rolling resistance and allows the trike to accelerate very quickly and easily. It also prevents tires from 'rolling under' when cornering at high speeds. And, of course, it prevents "pinch punctures" because the narrow tires are so hard that they virtually don't compress when hitting rocks or bumps.
Gives a firm ride, yes, but you're sitting on a "chaise lounge" seat and the extra performance is definitely worth it to some people!

For best performance go with the higher recommended figure on the side of your particular tire.
The only time I don't inflate to the highest recommendation is if the bike will be sitting in a closed car at the height of summer - when extremely high temperatures will cause air in the tire to increase in pressure and it may blow out the tire. Even then, I never knowingly go below the lower pressure recommended on the sidewall.

ABOUT INFLATING YOUR CATRIKE TIRES

There are two main types of valves used in bicycles. Schrader valves are the same size as those used in automobiles and some bicycles, mountain bikes in particular. They can be inflated by the air pump at most garages or service stations.

Your Catrike & many other high end bicycles have a thinner type of valve called a PRESTA VALVE.

When you unscrew the valve cap from a Presta valve, you find a small knob on top of the valve. It must be unscrewed to inflate, then rescrewed after inflation before putting the valve cap back on.
Most bicycle pumps come with two holes at the end of the hose... one for larger Schrader valves. The second, smaller one is for Presta valves.

It is common to have an air pressure gauge on the bigger hand pumps so you know exactly what the pressure is while inflating the tube/tire. Most small pumps carried for emergency use on bikes do not have a gauge, but some slightly more expensive ones do.
If you purchase an adapter - about $3 at bike shops - you can use the regular service station pumps to inflate your presta valved Catrikes or bicycles.

One final point, check your tire pressures regularly! Even when in storage, tires lose small amounts of pressure over time. It definitely pays in performance and reliability to keep tires properly inflated! You can purchase a small air pump with a pressure gauge at your bike shop.
